Qatar has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attacks by Houthi forces targeting civilian and economic sites in southern Saudi Arabia. Expressing solidarity with Saudi Arabia, Qatar reaffirmed its support for the Kingdom’s efforts to safeguard its security and sovereignty. The condemnation was conveyed by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani during a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. During their conversation, the two officials also explored ways to address regional developments and diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and maintaining stability in the region.
The attacks struck several areas, including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, resulting in injuries to 73 civilians, comprised of women and children. Additionally, some energy facilities experienced temporary disruptions. Qatar labeled these attacks as a dangerous escalation and a violation of both Saudi sovereignty and international law. In response, Doha called upon the international community to take decisive action against such aggressions and urged support for the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Yemen and Red Sea security.
Amidst escalating tensions, the recent surge in hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces has heightened fears of a broader conflict. The Houthis, who control the Yemeni capital Sanaa and substantial portions of northern Yemen, have increased their attacks on Saudi Arabian territories and vessels in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, government-aligned forces have launched offensives against areas under Houthi control, further exacerbating the situation.
The regional unrest and frequent attacks have underscored the urgency for increased diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
