Saudi Arabia and Greece Enhance Energy Partnership, Focus on Secure Shipping Routes

Saudi Arabia and Greece have reinforced their commitment to energy cooperation and international shipping safety amid concerns over global energy security. During talks in Riyadh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the necessity of protecting shipping routes and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies, highlighting the potential impact of attacks on energy infrastructure on global markets.

The leaders’ discussions focused significantly on energy collaboration, where both nations agreed to expedite the development of an electricity interconnection project. This initiative aims to facilitate power exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Europe via Greece. Additionally, they explored the possibility of exporting clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other EU countries, alongside investments in renewable energy, conventional energy, and petrochemicals.

Marking a century of diplomatic relations, Saudi Arabia and Greece also pledged to enhance economic ties in various sectors, including infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology. The bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $1.7 billion in 2025, reflecting increasing commercial engagement. In line with this, Saudi Arabia invited Greek companies to invest in the Kingdom, while Greece encouraged Saudi investment in its transport, energy, logistics, and digital infrastructure sectors.

Both countries prioritized digital connectivity, welcoming advancements in the EMC submarine cable project aimed at improving communications infrastructure between East and West. They committed to coordinating efforts to meet the project’s timeline.

Strengthening defense and security cooperation was also on the agenda, with a focus on counterterrorism, combating terrorist financing, cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, and professional training. The two nations reiterated their commitment to international climate agreements and supported collaboration in carbon management, artificial intelligence, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture.

These discussions build on the strategic partnership council established in 2022, underscoring the growing importance of Saudi-Greek relations in energy security, international trade, and regional connectivity.
