Italy Urges Diplomatic Resolution Amid Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Italy has expressed strong condemnation of the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirming the country’s solidarity with the Kingdom. In a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani emphasized Italy’s commitment to protecting civilians and infrastructure in the region while advocating for a diplomatic resolution to the Yemen crisis through United Nations efforts.

The discussion between the two ministers also touched on maritime security in strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Both officials highlighted the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and safeguarding commercial shipping routes to strengthen security across the Gulf region. Tajani underscored the significance of enhancing the European Union’s Operation Aspides, a naval mission initiated in February 2024, aimed at defending shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has issued a stern warning to the Houthis, highlighting the potential consequences of their continued attacks on the Kingdom. The Cabinet reiterated the necessity of ensuring the safety of navigation through the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. It also praised the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its efforts against the group.

Tajani extended his gratitude to Saudi authorities for their role in safeguarding Italian citizens residing in Saudi Arabia. The ongoing dialogue between Italy and Saudi Arabia reflects a broader international effort to address the complexities of the Yemeni conflict through diplomatic channels while ensuring regional stability and security.
