Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan Activate Military Pact to Counter Houthi Attacks

In a significant development amid escalating tensions in the region, Türkiye and Pakistan have agreed to deploy military forces to Saudi Arabia as part of the Mecca Defense Alliance. This decision follows recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on Saudi territory, prompting an emergency meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee of the alliance in Riyadh.

The meeting, attended by key figures including Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, resulted in an agreement to activate collective defense measures under the alliance. Established on August 7, the Mecca Defense Alliance encompasses Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Türkiye, creating a framework where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all three. This agreement marks the first significant deployment under the pact, highlighting the alliance’s commitment to mutual defense.

The recent Houthi attacks have intensified the ongoing conflict in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces are engaged in a counteroffensive to reclaim territory captured by Houthi fighters. The deployment of military forces by Türkiye and Pakistan is intended to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities in response to these threats.

Under the terms of the agreement, the deployment will occur in accordance with existing arrangements and the domestic laws of the participating countries. This move signifies a considerable step in operationalizing the alliance’s defense commitments, aiming to enhance regional security and stability.

As the situation in Yemen continues to evolve, the activation of collective defense measures under the Mecca Defense Alliance underscores the strategic importance of collaboration among member states in addressing shared security challenges.
