On September 15, Saudi air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed the drone, emphasizing the coalition’s commitment to protecting Mecca and Medina, which are considered sacred by Muslims worldwide. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki reaffirmed that the security of these sites is a “red line,” warning that further measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents.
The Houthi group, however, denied targeting Mecca. Hazem al-Assad, a spokesperson for the Houthis, rejected the coalition’s claims, asserting that the holy city was not the target of their operations. This denial comes amid a backdrop of increased Houthi activity and a heightened state of alert across Saudi Arabia.
The incident has drawn condemnation from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which expressed its support for the protection of Islamic holy sites. The OIC’s response underscores the broader international concern for the safety and sanctity of these revered locations.
