Emperor Naruhito of Japan declared the Games open on Saturday, alongside Empress Masako and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry, at a full-capacity 30,000-seat stadium. More than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories will compete across a diverse range of over 40 sports, including traditional events like athletics and swimming, as well as unique contests such as kabaddi, eSports, and BMX cycling.
The Games, running until October 4, also see the debut of padel and mixed martial arts, adding fresh excitement to the competition.
