India’s defence of the T20 World Cup is complete, and they did it in style. A 96-run thrashing of New Zealand in front of 100,000 fans cemented their status as the greatest T20 side of their generation, with every department of the game firing in the biggest match of the tournament.
The batting performance was a spectacle in itself. After a conservative start, India exploded in the powerplay to reach 92 without loss in six overs, equalling the highest such total in World Cup history. The top three — Sharma, Samson, and Kishan — all reached fifty, and the mid-innings drinks break arrived with India in an almost unassailable position at 191 for one.
There was a wobble of sorts in the middle phase, with four wickets tumbling in five overs and 300 being ruled out as a possibility. But 255 was more than enough, and the tail wagged late with Dube’s aggressive final-over hitting. India had posted a total that would have tested any team on the planet, and New Zealand were not that team on this night.
New Zealand’s chase began badly and never recovered. Allen was out cheaply, the top order contributed little collectively, and Bumrah systematically dismantled whatever resistance remained. Seifert’s fifty was spirited but inconsequential. Two dropped catches merely prolonged the outcome rather than threatening to change it.
India crossed the finish line with 96 runs to spare and did so to scenes of extraordinary celebration. Bumrah won the Player of the Match award for his three wickets. India stand alone in T20 history as the only men’s team to have defended the World Cup title.
