Trump Lashes Out at Iran: ‘Zero Chance of Comeback’ as Peace Talks Stall

President Donald Trump made no effort to soften his message to Iran on Thursday, publicly declaring that the country had been “militarily obliterated” with “zero chance of a comeback” and urging Tehran to accept a ceasefire deal before it was too late. The Truth Social post characterized Iranian negotiators as behaving in a contradictory and “strange” manner, claiming they were privately desperate for a deal even as their government spoke of merely reviewing Washington’s proposal. The message was unambiguous: Iran is in a losing position and needs to act accordingly.

The 15-point US ceasefire proposal on the table offers Iran a range of concessions, including sanctions relief, nuclear programme reductions, missile restrictions, and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to normal shipping. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, carrying approximately a fifth of global petroleum supplies. Iran’s rejection of this plan has left negotiations at a standstill despite Trump’s persistent optimism.

Tehran has broadcast its own ceasefire demands through state television, seeking an end to strikes on its officials, formal assurances against future wars, war reparations, and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These conditions represent a fundamentally different conception of what peace should entail and stand in sharp contrast to the US framework. The chasm between the two sides’ positions has not meaningfully narrowed.

The conflict has taken a devastating toll on human life. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, with additional deaths in Israel and neighboring countries. Thirteen American troops have also lost their lives, and millions of civilians across Iran and Lebanon have been displaced by the continuing violence.

Trump’s Thursday message was an attempt to strip Iran of any remaining sense of leverage and force a decision. With strikes continuing and diplomacy stalling, the region hangs in a precarious balance. How Iran responds to this pressure will likely determine whether peace is achieved or the conflict deepens further.
